Cairo

In this term in class 9 we have been learning about Egypt with help from a company called Cairo Comes to School. We had to pay three pounds to see and do the two activities. First we had to split our class into two groups of 15. Firstly we learnt Egyptian dance. We had to take our shoes off and it was extremely fun. The other activity was drumming and we had to use our hands and keep our rhythm. We got different sized drums and in the dancing we had to wear red and green hats. At the end of the day everyone did a performance part to the rest of the year group.

Art and Crafts

We have started art in class and we wanted to show you some of the things that we have done in the past term.

We have made hats for Egyptian Pharaohs and we had lots of fun. The hats are usually round with some sort of decoration to make the Pharaoh look important and special. The class made very different headdresses. Here are a few of them:

The materials we used included paper, glitter, paint, wool and cardboard. Pharaohs love being noticed and could get angry easily if they were not. Headdresses were meant to show off the faces of the Pharaohs.

Ancient Egyptians

WHO WERE THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS?

The Ancient Egyptians are one of the many old generations. Egyptians were around at 3150 BC. The Egyptians believed in many gods and goddesses, for example the sun god Ra. The Egyptians believed also in the after life, they also thought that their personalities would be judged when they died. The ancient Egyptians built many temples and pyramids. The first pyramid was the pyramid of Djoser that was called Saqqara. The biggest pyramid was called the Great Pyramid of Giza also known as Khufu's pyramid.

WHAT ARE PYRAMIDS?

A pyramid has a square base. The pyramids are tombs that were for very important people. The pyramids are made out of sandstone blocks and have a base that is around 52,600 square metres. They are built in Cairo and the most famous pyramids are the pyramids of Giza. Pyramids are the most famous land marks in all of Egypt followed by the Valley of the Kings. They are one of the seven wonders of the world.


WHO WERE PHARAOHS?

The Pharaohs were the rulers of Egypt. The Egyptians believed that they were like gods and worshiped them. The Pharaohs wore expensive items like gold nearly everyday. The youngest Pharaoh was Tutankhamun he was throned Pharaoh when he was nine and died when he was eighteen. He is the most recognisable Pharaoh.

His death mask was made out of solid gold which was worth millions of pounds. Many people say he died due to a open wound that was infected with bacteria.

Today tourists come to see the magnificent country of Egypt.

Ancient Civilizations

In class 9 we have been learning about Ancient Egypt and here are the facts, questions and answers we have researched.

Egypt and Egyptians
Egypt is mostly sand and desert, where nothing grows. The ancient Egyptians settled on the banks of the river Nile which ran all the way through Egypt. They had plenty of water for themselves and their crops.


Why were the Egyptians great?
The Egyptians were farmers that grew crops for their families and the Pharaohs. The farmers were very good at what they did and soon the Pharaohs became rich. So they gathered men and decided to make pyramids as tombs that they could be buried in.

Pyramids

Pyramids are huge temples made out of large stone blocks. Pyramids were built in many different shapes and sizes. Today there are about eighty pyramids standing in Egypt. At Giza there are the biggest three pyramids which were built for Pharaoh Khufa. The best known pyramid is called the 'Great Pyramid'.

Gods and Goddesses
The Egyptians loved to wear lucky charms. Their favorites were scarabs. The scarab beetle was sacred to the Sun god, Ra.

Priests had to wash twice during the day and twice at night, to make themselves clean and pure for their Gods.

Visit to Eastbury Manor House

Eastbury Manor House

On Monday 9th June we went to a place called Eastbury Manor House. There we found out about Tudors. We saw what the clothes looked like and we saw how the rooms looked. We learnt how to say hello (good morrow) and goodbye (fare thee well). We saw some fruits and herbs growing in the garden and they told us that they used to burn bricks and make patterns like hearts and diamonds in the walls. The stairs were really scary because they were old and steep and they were in a spiral.

Tudors

In history we have been doing work about Tudors. Tudors were at the time 1845 AD. Tudors wore lots of layers of clothes. First women and men wore plain white material used as shirts. Next women wore a dress made of wool then a jacket. Men wore jackets with a hole to carry a knife. There was cord to tighten the jacket. Men also wore a hat with a feather. They had trousers called doublet.

Tudor Times

We had a visitor from the museum who came to talk about the Tudors. Keerthana and Yusuf dressed up in the Tudor costumes and looked very good in them. We looked at stuff like spoons, plates, shoes, candle light and a thing that you clean with. It was fun!

Tudors Visit

On the 7th of May a lady called Catherine came in from a museum to teach us about the Tudors and how they lived.

Two people from our class dressed up as Thomas and his wife Constance and they looked very hot because they had to wear lots of layers of thick clothes and in the Tudor times they had to wear all those clothes to show-off.
